A Mother's Reaction to Teen Sexual Orientation Surveys

Connie Jo Hutchinson found herself confronting her sixth grade son's principal after learning that her son was surveyed on his sexual orientation in class.

In a recent article Hutchinson stated that she did not see the educational value of what was being asked of her child. She also expressed a lack of information about the program that was being presented to her son. The program, Shifting Boundaries, is a federally funded program requiring surveys to be handed out to students. The sixth question posed to students read "What is your sexual orientation?" and gave ten possible options. Hutchinson removed her son from the program and has since met with the principal. She credited the principal for taking her concerns seriously and being proactive in addressing the issue.
